Messenger of God – Jeremiah, Me, You

Messenger of God - Jeremiah

My Word of the Year is Intentional. As I began looking for a verse that I might claim, I kept finding verses where messengers of God said, “But as for me…” I thought, “These people are intentional in their lives. I want that”. So we will start looking at these scriptures. I have some friends helping me out and they are already stepping on my toes.”

So here we go… Introducing Deborah Rutherford.

messengers of God

By Deborah Rutherford

As for me, here I am, in your hand; do with me as seems good and proper to you. But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will surely bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its inhabitants; for truly the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.

Jeremiah 26:14-15NKJV

Be a Faithful Messenger –

Do we faithfully submit when God gives an assignment or a call to action? Or do we tend to take the easy way? Then perhaps we convince ourselves that we misheard God when He presents a challenging task. I once tried to assure myself that I didn’t clearly hear one of God’s prompts only to get a bigger prompt which thankfully I did not ignore. The consequences would have been to miss a blessing and God’s best for my life.

A Trusting Messenger –

Perhaps we should look at it as an honor when God calls us to do great things that we can only accomplish through Him. As far I can tell, God is not interested in the easy. Spectacular, mystery, the unknown – doing big and amazing – that’s our God. Because our God is faithful; we must always trust Him. His plan, His way.

When we surrender to God’s will and do whatever He asks, we place ourselves in God’s hands, God’s will. And God will protect us. Therefore, do not fear, for if God is with us, who can be against us?

The Courageous & Confident Messenger –

The prophet Jeremiah received the difficult call to prophesize to the wayward nation of Judah leading up to the Babylonia captivity. This placed a tremendous burden on Jeremiah as he longed to see the king and people of Judah restored by God’s mercy and grace.

We can gain confidence in knowing that God will deliver us by looking to the Prophet Jeremiah and our key verses: 14As for me, here I am, in your hand; do with me as seems good and proper to you. 15 But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will surely bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its inhabitants; for truly the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.

What makes Jeremiah so courageous? First, discover God’s call to Jeremiah in Jeremiah Chapter 1:4-19. I am sure you will be just as touched by the beauty and power of God’s calling for Jeremiah to be His Prophet. While reading this scripture, I felt the power of our living God’s word, the might, and the magnificence. My world moved at that moment.

Importantly, Verse 8 reads, “Do not be afraid of their faces, For I am with you to deliver you,” says the LORD.”

So, like Jeremiah, when the Lord gives a demanding call, we do not need to be afraid. We can be courageous knowing that the Lord will deliver and finish the good work He started in us. As believers, we are servants of God, and like Jeremiah, God calls us to testify and speak. Sometimes we may be worried about what someone thinks, but we should not. Let us lean into God and watch Him do remarkable things in our lives.

The Obedient Messenger –

The question here is, like Jeremiah, will we accept the call to a difficult ministry? Therefore, will we trust God enough to lay our lives in His hands? To be messengers of God?

Above all, know that God loves and will never leave or forsake His beloved ones. As God gives us all we need to do the work He calls us to do, we can rise to any occasion to answer the call to speak, write, sing, accepting even the most difficult of ministries.

As Christian disciples spread the gospel’s good news. By putting our lives into God’s hands, we can be successful messengers of God.

  1. This spoke to me. Your comfort zone and purpose are diametrically opposed. God’s will, though rewarding, is rarely easy.

    Thank you for this!

  2. It’s easy to ignore messages from God, especially if we don’t think we’re suited to the task. May we faithfully listen and act and be surprised by the ways he blesses us!

  3. DEBBY OSA , That is a wonderful way to describe our call to discipleship! “Your comfort zone and purpose are diametrically opposed. God’s will, though rewarding, is rarely easy”. Thank you!
