I heard a radio interview the other day with Gary Thomas, the author of Sacred Marriage, and it really caught my attention. What especially drew me in was the subtitle, “What If God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than to Make Us Happy?”. I had to purchase the book to get “the rest of the story”.
Sacred Marriage
Sacred Marriage reveals how marriage trains us to love God and others well, how it exposes sin and makes us more aware of God’s presence, how good marriages foster good prayer, how married sex feeds the spiritual life, and more.
Using scripture along with real-life stories and classic author quotes, Gary Thomas brings to reality that our marriage relationship can lead us to a greater relationship with God .. If we allow it. And thus, both will be greatly improved. He teaches that is really is all about God and not about me. If more couples believed this, there would be many more stable and long-lasting marriages.
Too often we enter marriage with the fairy tale idea that we will “live happily ever after”. But then, the first big fight comes along and we decide that we are incompatible. When the truth is this fight is only exposing our own bent toward selfishness. If we open our hearts a bit, we can learn the lesson and improve our image of God and subsequently have an improved marriage.
